When changes occur in sight which make it difficult to read certain lines on the "sight test chart (Snellen Chart)" or seeing people and objects located in the peripheral field of vision ('side vision') becomes a problem, being registered as 'sight impaired' (previously referred to as 'partially-sighted') or 'severely sight impaired' (previously referred to as 'blind') may be considered. Many people believe that the term "blind" means a total loss of vision. In the vast majority of cases where people are registered blind or severely sight impaired, some useful vision remains - it is rare to lose all vision in its entirety.
